BRAZIL

Phelps Dodge Brazil was established in 1997, originally as a joint venture between Phelps Dodge Corporation and Alcoa Aluminio S.A. The company is now wholly owned by Phelps Dodge Corporation. Phelps Dodge Brazil is a leading company in the Brazilian market for bare and insulated aluminum cables, serving the power transmission and distribution market. PD Brazil is also present in the international markets, exporting our products to USA, South America, Africa and Australia, among other regions. We manufacture a broad line of copper and aluminum wires and cables for the power utility, industrial and construction segments.

Milestones

  • 1975 Establishment of Termocanadá Electrical Conductors in the city of Poços de Caldas (aluminum and copper, wire and cable producer)
  • 1980 Purchase of Termocanadá Electrical Conductor by Alcoa Alumínio S.A.
  • 1989 Poços de Caldas' plant obtained the ISO 9001 certification from INMETRO, the National Institute of Measurement, Standardization, and Industrial Quality.
  • 1995 The Scientific and Technological Brazilian Institute that certifies products and quality management systems to the electrical and electronic industry, grants its certification to the company.
  • 1997 Joint-venture Alcoa / Phelps Dodge for the Brazilian wire and cables market.
  • 1997 Phelps Dodge Brazil obtained the certification to supply cables for the Brazilian nuclear plants from IBQN, the National Nuclear Quality Brazilian Institute.
  • 2001 Phelps Dodge purchases 100% of stocks from the joint-venture with Alcoa.
  • 2001 ISO 14001 certification is obtained from the Scientific and Technological Brazilian Institute.
  • 2002 Argentinean Standardization Institute certification for the supply of insulated aluminum XLPE 0.6/1kV cables according to IRAM 2178 and IRAM 2263 standards
  • 2003 ISO 9001- version 2000 certification is received.
  • 2003 Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) certification is obtained allowing PD Brazil to serve the US market.

Plant Profile

Phelps Dodge Brazil's facility is located in the city of Poços de Caldas, State of Minas Gerais, with a total area of 500.000m² and built area of 50.000m². We manufacture bare and insulated aluminum cables for transmission and distribution lines. Our plant is also capable to produce copper power cables for low, medium and high voltage. Our cables for medium and high voltage are produced in a real triple extrusion and dry curing process.

 

 

CHILE

South AM Plant

National investors founded Cobre Cerrillos S.A. (Cocesa) in 1950 for the manufacturing and commercialization of copper and other non-ferrous metals products, mainly electrical conductors and related products. Phelps Dodge Corporation bought 90.04% of Cobre Cerrillos S.A. in 1968. The plant’s administration and sales offices are located in Cerrillos, and a sales office is located in Antofagasta, in the northern region of Chile.

Milestones

  • 1985 Cocesa introduces a new generation of Halogen Free cables of excellent flame retardant capacity and low smoke emission level characteristics.
  • 1986 Cocesa introduces medium voltage submarine cables for the oil platforms in the south of the country. Cocesa is the first Chilean cables factory to obtain ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification.
  • 2002 ISO 14000 certification obtained.

VENEZUELA

South AM Plant 2

Alambres y Cables Venezolanos, C.A. (ALCAVE), is a Phelps Dodge International

 Corporation operation located in Venezuela, South America. Alcave supplies its local market and exports its products to countries in North, Central and South America, with the main markets located in the Andean region, Chile and Mexico.

Milestones

The company was the first manufacturer of wires and cables established in Venezuela, under the name of "FIAT LUX, C.A.".

  • 1957 FIAT LUX, C.A. associates with Phelps Dodge International Corporation, becoming Alambres y Cables Venezolanos, C.A.
  • 1993 Phelps Dodge International Corporation acquires Iconel, Conal and Plástica as separate business units dedicated to power cables, aluminum conductors and building wire.
  • 1999 the Venezuelan plants (Conal, Iconel, Alcave and Plástica) merge under the name of ALCAVE C.A.

Alambres y Cables Venezolanos, C.A.(ALCAVE), is a leading company in Latin America in the production and sales of aluminum and copper cables for low, medium and high voltage transmission systems and electricity distribution networks. ALCAVE is comprised of two production facilities:

  • Aluminum Branch (Conal) aluminum products, bare and insulated (low and medium voltage).
  • Copper Branch (Iconel) copper products, bare and insulated for many applications (low and medium voltage).
